It can occur in any community or home, regardless of gender, race, religion, education, social status, marital status, or sexual orientation. It may be a single event, or an ongoing pattern of abuse, harassment, stalking, or coercive control where someone is physically harmed or put in fear, prevented from doing what they wish, or forced to behave in ways against their will. Domestic violence happens between spouses, romantic or dating partners, family members, and parents and children.

Any form of it can and should be dealt with through aggressive court action.
